About Down to Earth Jewellery

Down to Earth Jewellery is rooted in nature, intention, and individuality.

We create copper, gemstone and shell jewellery through a combination of original design, electroforming and carefully chosen production techniques, allowing each collection to honour the beauty and character of the natural materials that inspire it. Our collections include raw and polished stones, organic forms, and thoughtfully designed pieces that feel alive on the body.

We are inspired by the way nature works — slowly, imperfectly, and with deep intelligence. Copper, stones and shells carry a grounding energy, and wearing them is a sensory experience. Like walking barefoot on the earth. Like breathing in fresh air. Like returning to your body and becoming present in your environment.

Some of our designs are created through electroforming — a process where copper grows organically and bonds directly to gemstones, forming unique textures that can never be repeated. Other pieces are shaped by hand using traditional jewellery-making techniques. Each method is chosen intentionally, guided by the material and the feeling we want the piece to carry.

Designed in our Blouberg studio, every collection begins with an original idea inspired by nature. We work with trusted manufacturing partners who specialise in the techniques best suited to each design, before many pieces are carefully assembled and finished locally. By producing thoughtfully rather than simply producing more, we create jewellery that feels personal, meaningful and made to be worn for years to come.

Founder & Creative Visionary

Rethea's love for jewellery began in childhood, inspired by the gemstones in her mother's jewellery box—each one a small wonder, filled with colour, texture and quiet magic.

She later earned a degree in Jewellery Design from Stellenbosch University, where she developed the technical foundation that continues to shape her work today. Her journey has since moved through many design disciplines, gradually leading her back to natural materials, organic forms and jewellery inspired by the world around her.

Exploring copper electroforming became a turning point, opening a new way of working with stone, texture and form.

As her collections evolved, so did her approach. While electroforming remains an important part of Down to Earth Jewellery, Rethea embraced a wider range of jewellery-making techniques, including traditional handcrafting, precision casting and other specialist production methods. By choosing the technique best suited to each design, she is able to bring her creative vision to life while maintaining the quality, character and integrity that define the brand.

An avid surfer and lifelong lover of nature, Rethea finds endless inspiration in the ocean, mountains, gemstones and the quiet beauty of the natural world. That connection flows through every collection, creating jewellery that encourages people to slow down, reconnect and carry a little piece of nature with them wherever they go.
