Down to Earth Jewellery

Small Sapphire Necklace (September birthstone)

This delicate and versatile chain extends from 40cm to 50cm and has a ring clasp. The links are oval, 1.25mm x 0.9mm in size. The pendant is a 6-8mm sapphire set in copper.

Chains are made from solid copper, although they are rose gold plated to preserve the finish. The plating will wear off in time, revealing the natural copper colour underneath. Copper is a natural antibacterial agent, and the wearing of copper jewellery is considered to have a therapeutic effect on the human body.

All jewellery comes in a beautiful jewellery box with a relevant gemstone information card, as well as a thank you note with care instructions.

The gemstones we use are raw and unpolished, so they might have some” imperfections”. (In our opinion it adds to the beauty and individuality of each piece!)

Jewellery pieces are created by a process called copper electroforming, which allows for the deposition of copper electrolytes over several hours in a copper/acid solution. This results in unique and unpredictable textures, as the entire process is organic.

Please be aware that the colour of copper darkens over time, and the item can be cleaned using a sachet of Copperbrite and a soft cloth. (Available here) Copper can potentially turn the skin green as it reacts with the chemicals in some skins. A coat of clear nail polish will prevent this.

About Sapphire:

One of the four precious gemstones, sapphires are part of the corundum family. While red corundum is called ruby, all the other colours in this family are classified as sapphires. The sapphire and ruby siblings are the hardest stones after diamonds, scoring a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.

The word sapphire is derived from the Latin and Greek words for “blue” namely sapphirius and sappheiros. Although you will probably think of a rich blue colour, sapphires actually come in almost every colour of the rainbow!

Birthstone: September

Anniversary stone: 5th, 45th, 75th

 Symbolism:

Known as the Stone of Kings, sapphire has always been associated with royalty. It was worn for protection as well as to attract wealth. For centuries, the sapphire has been seen as a symbol of the heavens, a guardian of innocence, bestower of truth and promoter of good health. Also known as the wisdom stone, it is meant to represent intelligence, clear thinking, education and the ability to make wise choices.
