Small Herkimer Diamond Necklace(April birthstone)

This delicate and versatile chain extends from 40cm to 50cm and has a ring clasp. The links are oval, 1.25mm x 0.9mm in size. The pendant is a 8-10mm Herkimer diamond set in copper.

Chains are made from solid copper, although they are rose gold plated to preserve the finish. The plating will wear off in time, revealing the natural copper colour underneath. Copper is a natural antibacterial agent, and the wearing of copper jewellery is considered to have a therapeutic effect on the human body.

All jewellery comes in a beautiful jewellery box with a relevant gemstone information card, as well as a thank you note with care instructions.

The  gemstones we use are raw and unpolished, so they might have some” imperfections”. (In our opinion it adds to the beauty and individuality of each piece!) 

Jewellery pieces are created by a process called copper electroforming, which allows for the deposition of copper electrolytes over several hours in a copper/acid solution. This results in unique and unpredictable textures, as the entire process is organic.

Please be aware that the colour of copper darkens over time, and the item can be cleaned using a sachet of Copperbrite and a soft cloth. (Available here on my website at www.downtoeartjewellery.co.za) Copper can potentially turn the skin green as it reacts with the chemicals in some skins. A coat of clear nail polish will prevent this.

 About Herkimer Diamond:

Herkimer diamonds are beautiful double terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer, New York. Incredibly, these phenomenal gemstones are close to 500 million years old. The crystals are magnificent works of nature, and are found in the rock, naturally faceted, each having eighteen facets and two points.  They are unlike real diamonds that have to be cut by man to give it its facets.

The Mohawk Indians held these crystals in high esteem and used them to make amulets.

It is also thought to energize, enliven and promote creativity, while it also represents ease, peace and calm in uncomfortable or fearful situations. Some believe the Herkimer diamond is effective in promoting dream recall.
