Cleaning Copper 101

The Allure of Tarnish: Why Your Copper Jewelry Needs a Little TLC (And How to Give It!) ✨

We all know copper jewellery is a total vibe – it's earthy, it's unique, and it adds a touch of magic to any outfit. But here's the thing: copper is a living metal! Yep, you read that right. It reacts to the world around it, developing a patina (fancy word for tarnish) over time. This patina can be beautiful, adding a vintage charm and a story to your piece. Think of it like your favourite pair of jeans – they get better with age and tell a tale of adventures!

But sometimes, you just want that bright, shiny copper glow back. And that's where we always hear the question: "How do I clean my copper jewellery?"

Cleaning Up Your Copper Without the Harsh Stuff

Fear not, copper lovers! Restoring your jewellery's shine is a breeze. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners are a big no-no – they can damage the metal and leave your precious piece looking worse for wear. That's why we love Copperbrite! It's like a spa day for your copper jewellery.

Copperbrite: Your Shine-Bringing BFF

Copperbrite is a gentle, non-abrasive solution that removes tarnish quickly and effectively. Here's the best part: it's easy to use! No complicated steps or harsh chemicals involved. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Gather Your Supplies: Grab some Copperbrite (we know you've got some ), warm water, a soft cloth, and maybe even a soft-bristled brush for those intricate nooks and crannies.
  2. Mix It Up: Dilute the Copperbrite according to the instructions (it's a concentrate, so a little goes a long way!).
  3. Soak and Shine: Dip your copper jewellery into the warm Copperbrite solution for a few minutes. The tarnish will start to magically disappear!
  4. Buff It Out: For stubborn tarnish spots, gently buff your jewellery with a soft brush. The soft cloth is perfect for a final polish.
  5. Rinse and Repeat (But Gently!): Rinse your jewellery thoroughly with clean water to remove any leftover solution. Pat it dry with your soft cloth, and voila! Your copper is back to its radiant best.

Tarnish or Shine? You Decide!

The beauty of copper is that it gives you options. Love the vintage vibes of the patina? Rock it with pride! Craving a bright, shiny look? Copperbrite is your new BFF. The choice is yours!

P.S. Copperbrite is also eco-friendly, which means you can clean your copper jewellery with a clear conscience (and a happy planet!). So go forth, embrace the beauty of copper, and don't be afraid to give your pieces a little TLC with Copperbrite! ✨

You can make another natural cleaner by mixing lemon juice (or vinegar) and baking soda into a foamy mixture. Apply to the Copper and buff with a soft cloth. Rinse with water and dry. These mixtures work because the acid in the vinegar or lemon juice strips the oxidised patina from the Copper, and the salt acts as a mild abrasive to remove the grime. Of course, you can also use lime juice instead of lemon.

At Down to Earth Jewellery, we love Copper because it is here forever. It is beautiful in all its patina phases, from the brown tints to the bluey-green tarnishing hues. The changes in its colour when we wear Copper remind us that it is indeed a living metal and tells us a story of where it has been and how it interacts with everything it touches. How cool is that!

Copperbrite is available online and can be purchased as a cleaning kit with our Polishing Cloth.
